Twenty-five years. One family. One architect.
1998. We walked into a plot in Sadashiv Nagar and met a family who wanted to build their home. They were at the beginning of something. So were we.
What followed was not a project. It was a relationship that has now lasted longer than most marriages, longer than most buildings, longer than most things in a city that tears itself down and rebuilds every decade. As the family grew, the house grew with them. Children were born. Floors were added. The way each generation used the building shifted, and we were there every time it needed to shift.
Then came the top-floor brief, and with it, a family that had figured out exactly who they were. They didn't want a floor. They wanted a switch. One that could transform the entire home: quiet and private on ordinary days, alive and celebratory when the occasion demanded it. Every light is on. Every space is open. The whole house shifts registers at once, from sanctuary to celebration, without changing a single piece of furniture.
Theatre. Spa. Sundeck. Each is designed to work in both modes, seamlessly. When the family gathers for an occasion, the house knows. The top floor sets the tone, and the rest of the home follows. When the last guest leaves, it settles back into itself just as easily
In 2023, the latest chapter: grandchildren. The horizontal terrace railings, elegant, considered, and correct when they were designed, had become a climbing frame. We replaced them with vertical bars. Kid-safe. Still beautiful. Still, architecturally faithful to everything the building had been for twenty-five years.
A home to live in. A home to celebrate in. That is what it was built for. That is what it remains.
