A promise made to a father. Built in stone and teak.
This project did not begin with a site visit. It began with a story.
Three brothers had decided to leave their ancestral home, the place that had held the family for as long as anyone could remember. It was not an easy decision. And in the weight of that transition, the youngest brother made a vow to his father: we will build something new. Something worthy. Something that holds this family together for another generation.
The father agreed. The site was chosen: a hilltop in Sandur, five acres, commanding views in every direction. Thirty thousand square feet. Eight suites. A home built to the full measure of the promise that created it.
Then, during construction, the father passed away. He never saw the home that was built for him.
The family came to us and asked for something more than architecture. They asked us to build a memorial into the heart of the house, something that every family member would pass through every single day, that would carry his memory without being a monument, that would make his presence permanent in a home he never entered.
We reached out to master craftsmen in Mysore. Commissioned a grand staircase from three hundred cubic feet of Mysore teak, hand-carved, floor to ceiling, the most significant piece of craft in the building. Not decoration. Not material selection. An act of grief made permanent in wood.
The father never walked into the home that was built in his honour. But every time his family does, they walk past something that tells them he was never forgotten. That is what architecture can do, when it is asked to do more than shelter.
